Permanent make-up and microblading – what is the difference?

image blog17

A common question that makeup artists are asked in their everyday work is the difference between permanent makeup and microblading. This is understandable, as microblading is one of the latest developments in decorative cosmetics. The treatment originated in Asia and has taken the world by storm in recent years. Permanent make-up, on the other hand, has long been established and is part of the conventional offering of many cosmetic studios. So what does the new method entail and what are the differences between permanent make-up and microblading?

Permanent make up

Permanent make-up is a form of cosmetic tattoos, which are also widely known under the technical terms micro-pigmentation and derma-pigmentation. Using tattoo techniques, designs and contours are incorporated into the skin that visually correspond to the desired make-up. Areas of the face such as the eyebrows, eyelids and lips are usually treated. The result is aesthetically emphasized facial features that no longer require daily make-up. An effect achieved by pigmenting the upper layers of the skin using a pigmentation device and special colors. Depending on the color quality and treatment method, permanent make-up can last for years, but will fade over time and should be renewed. Permanent make-up is also used for medical pigmentation, for example for breast pigmentation. Great results can be achieved with permanent make-up, but the method can reach its limits when it comes to fine detailing - especially in the eyebrow area.

Microblading

Microblading, as offered by Swiss Happy Brows, is a subcategory of permanent make-up and is used in the eyebrow area. Instead of a pigmentation device, so-called blades, small needles arranged in a row, are used to draw fine hairs. The treatment is carried out manually - without the use of machines. After the desired eyebrow shape has been worked in using the blades, the pigment color is massaged into the microscopic skin openings. The result is very fine and detailed hairs that give the eyebrow a natural and full look. At the same time, the skin is not penetrated as deeply as with permanent make-up. This allows a 3D effect to be achieved and the hairs look much sharper.

Basically, microblading and permanent make-up differ in the area of application and the utensils used. While microblading is used for the cosmetic treatment of the eyebrows, permanent make-up is also used in other areas of the skin. Before treatment, it is always advisable to get information in a consultation - we are happy to do that for you at Swiss Happy Brows in Zurich and Lucerne!
